Willys Overland Lofts lands first commercial tenant, Re:View Contemporary Gallery
Re:View Contemporary Gallery, the first commercial tenant at Willys Overland Lofts, bolsters the growing list of Midtown's retail and cultural amenities. The art space celebrated its grand opening on October 18.
Re:View incorporates elements -- like signage and displays -- from various local artists and designers into its basic decor while, as a gallery, it will rotate shows from local and national artists. "It's beyond a standard gallery function," says gallery director Simone DeSousa. "We're integrating design into the making of the gallery -- this project is about combined energy, combined talent."
DeSousa's goal is to elevate Detroit's gallery scene while bringing together local artists. "A lot of people don't see our galleries as they would elsewhere, like in Chicago and New York," she says. "Our commitment is to the quality of the exhibits [and] integrating the community."
DeSousa plans to host workshops on art and writing and to grow Re:View's website into an extension of the gallery space, where it will foster discussions about works exhibited as well as community art and cultural happenings.
The gallery's debut exhibit, Space and Time: Ten Years of the Salt Mine, featuring works by DeSousa and Coley McLean, is currently on display. Re:View is open Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. Email info@reviewcontemporary.com for more information.
